DEPARTMENT OF FORENSIC MEDICINE AND TOXICOLOGY
The Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, KGMC, is the center for the teaching and training of undergraduate and postgraduate Medico-legal work. Trainees of this department are serving in various medical institutes in the speciality. At present, the department is recognized for undergraduate teaching of the speciality and post graduate training and examination center for DMJ (Diploma in Medical Jurisprudence) from KMU Peshawar.
Forensic Medicine is the subject which deals with the application of the principles of medical knowledge for the purpose of law and furthering of justice and Forensic Toxicology is the discipline of studying under a forensic profile the pathologies induced by poisons, drugs, drugs of abuse, toxins, pesticides, chemicals and agrochemicals, doping substances and, in part, food supplements.
Medical graduates in practice deal with examination and assessment of individuals who have been—or are suspected to have been—injured or killed by external influence such as trauma or intoxication, but also of individuals who are suspected of having injured another person.
Age estimation is one of the primary responsibilities of doctors involved in medical practice in public sector. It is an integral procedure aiming to estimate the chronological age of an individual, whose age is either unknown or doubtful, by means of assessing the stage of dental, skeletal, and physical development. Age determination is also important in criminal investigations.
Victims of physical and sexual assaults are brought by the police to the doctors for medicolegal assessment and opinion. Faculty of the department teach and train medical students how to examine, assess and formulate opinion in cases of physical assaults, sexual assaults, age estimation, and postmortem examinations. They also get guidance and training of how to diagnose and manage acute and chronic poisoning cases.
