DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOLOGY & THERAPEUTICS,
KHYBER GIRLS MEDICAL COLLEGE
Department of Pharmacology & therapeutics is an integral part of the undergraduate teaching of Basic Sciences in the field of Pharmacology at KGMC Peshawar. Moreover since 2013, it is enrolled with the Khyber Medical University (KMU) for the postgraduate M. Phil program in Pharmacology and is recognized by Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) Islamabad. While previously the subject was taught in the 3rd year MBBS curriculum, with the introduction of the modular system of teaching by the KMU and PMC the faculty of the Department of Pharmacology is imparting the knowledge to 1st , 2nd , 3rd , and 4th year MBBS on the basis of modules and blocks.
Pharmacology as a subject is the cornerstone and at the gate way between basic science and clinical science. In itself the subject rationalizes the understanding and application of knowledge about the drugs and its groups to the medical professional in particular and public in general. Medical Students when they start visiting the hospitals in 3rd year, find Pharmacology is essential in their understanding of the clinical subjects. The roles of Pharmacology become even more important for the graduates after they start practicing in the field of medicine both at general cadre and specialist practice. Infect out of the many subjects taught in the medical curriculum it is the Pharmacology that keeps updating itself and never loses its importance and priority in clinical practice. As a post graduate subject Pharmacology offers great incentive to the keen and learning mind to explore the world of research in the identification and marketing of the generic molecules that can aid in the diagnosis, treatment and cure of diseases among the ailing community of mankind.
In addition to the undergraduates, KGMC postgraduate Medical Education Department provides itself in producing four successful M Phil Pharmacology degree holders who are now serving as respectable faculty of Pharmacology in various medical institutes. The research Laboratory in the department of Pharmacology is a state of art laboratory and is catering not only for the postgraduate scholars of Pharmacology but is also pivotal in supplying essential aids to Scholars from other basic Medical Science Subjects.
